Rising from the Ashes: How to Rebuild After Fire Damage

3/29/2024 (Permalink)

The aftermath of a fire can be devastating, leaving behind charred belongings, smoke-damaged walls, and a sense of overwhelming loss. However, amidst the ashes, there is hope. With the right support and guidance, it's possible to rebuild and restore your home or business to its former glory. In this blog post, we'll explore the steps you can take to navigate the challenging process of recovering from fire damage and emerging stronger on the other side.

Assessing the Damage

The first step in the fire damage restoration process is to assess the extent of the damage. This involves inspecting the property for structural issues, smoke residue, and water damage from firefighting efforts. It's crucial to enlist the help of a professional restoration company like SERVPRO®, who can conduct a thorough assessment and develop a comprehensive restoration plan tailored to your specific needs.

Safety First

Before re-entering the property, ensure that it's safe to do so. Be mindful of structural instability, electrical hazards, and toxic fumes lingering in the air. If in doubt, wait for the fire department or restoration professionals to give the all-clear. Safety should always be the top priority during the restoration process.

Water Damage Mitigation

In many cases, water damage is a significant concern after a fire due to firefighting efforts. Standing water can lead to mold growth and further structural damage if not addressed promptly. A restoration company like SERVPRO® can deploy specialized equipment to extract water, dry out the affected areas, and prevent secondary damage from occurring.

Smoke and Soot Removal

Smoke and soot can permeate every surface of your property, leaving behind stubborn stains and unpleasant odors. Professional restoration technicians have the knowledge, tools, and cleaning agents necessary to effectively remove smoke residue and restore your property to its pre-fire condition. This may involve deep cleaning carpets, upholstery, and drapery, as well as using ozone generators to neutralize odors.

Content Restoration

While some belongings may be beyond repair, many items can be salvaged with the right techniques. A reputable restoration company can assess the condition of your belongings and provide cleaning, deodorization, and restoration services as needed. From furniture and clothing to electronics and documents, they'll work tirelessly to save as much as possible.

Rebuilding and Restoration

Once the property has been cleaned and sanitized, the rebuilding process can begin. This may involve repairing structural damage, replacing damaged materials, and restoring the property to its pre-fire condition. Throughout this phase, it's essential to work closely with your restoration team to ensure that your vision for the property is realized.

Recovering from fire damage is a challenging journey, but with the right support and resources, it's possible to rebuild and reclaim what was lost. By enlisting the help of a professional restoration company like SERVPRO, you can rest assured that your property is in capable hands. From assessing the damage to rebuilding and restoration, they'll be with you every step of the way, guiding you towards a brighter future.

Reviving Memories: The Essential Role of Content Cleaning in Restoration

2/23/2024 (Permalink)

In the aftermath of a disaster, whether it's a fire, flood, or another calamity, the physical damage to structures is often evident. However, what may be overlooked is the sentimental value attached to personal belongings within those spaces. Family heirlooms, cherished photographs, and irreplaceable mementos can all be marred by smoke, soot, or water damage. This is where content cleaning, performed by professional restoration companies, plays a vital role in preserving not just items, but memories.

The Art of Content Cleaning

Content cleaning is more than just removing dirt or grime from objects; it's about restoring them to their preloss condition. Professional restoration companies employ a variety of specialized techniques and equipment to carefully clean and decontaminate a wide range of items. From delicate fabrics and electronics to furniture and artwork, each item requires a tailored approach to ensure its integrity is preserved.

Understanding the Process

The content cleaning process typically begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Trained technicians categorize items based on their material, composition, and extent of damage. This helps determine the most appropriate cleaning methods and ensures that each item receives the care it deserves.

Next, the cleaning process commences. Depending on the nature of the damage, different techniques may be employed, including:

  • Dry Cleaning: For items with light surface contamination, dry cleaning methods such as brushing or vacuuming may be sufficient.
  • Wet Cleaning: This method involves the use of water or specialized cleaning solutions to remove more stubborn stains and residue.
  • Ultrasonic Cleaning: Utilizing high-frequency sound waves, ultrasonic cleaning is particularly effective for delicate items and those with intricate details.
  • Ozone Treatment: Ozone generators are used to neutralize odors and sanitize items affected by smoke or mold.

Throughout the process, restoration professionals exercise caution to prevent further damage to the items and ensure that they are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

Restoring More Than Objects

While the primary objective of content cleaning is to restore physical items, its impact often extends far beyond the material realm. For many individuals, the items they own carry sentimental value and are intrinsically linked to cherished memories. By successfully restoring these items, restoration companies help to alleviate some of the emotional trauma caused by the disaster, allowing homeowners to reclaim a sense of normalcy and continuity amidst the chaos.

Conclusion

Content cleaning is an essential component of the restoration process, bridging the gap between physical recovery and emotional healing. By preserving cherished belongings and memories, restoration companies not only restore homes and businesses but also revive hope and resilience in the face of adversity. As communities come together to rebuild and recover, the meticulous care and dedication demonstrated by restoration professionals serve as a beacon of light in the darkest of times. Water Damage can occur unexpectedly from malfunctioning appliances like dishwashers or toilets, but a lot of the time it occurs from an outside source like heavy rainfall or snow. If you notice a lot of rainfall accumulating or if your area issues a flood warning, there are several steps you can take to minimize potential damages to your residential property or commercial business.

  1. Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so by local authorities
  2. Disconnect electrical equipment and appliances in your home
  3. Move vehicles out of the low lying parking garage in commercial spaces
  4. Raise elevators from the bottom floor in commercial spaces
  5. Remove valuable items from basements and relocate them to an upper level of the home or space
  6. Ensure that you have food, water, and other essentials if the flooding is predicted to be bad enough where you may not be able to leave your home

In the case of evacuation, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water. It is always better to evacuate as early as possible if you are told to by local weather authorities instead of taking the chance of getting trapped in your home or business. Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water or try to walk through moving water to salvage items.

In the case of a flood for a commercial business, secure the property to the best of your ability. Contact local emergency officials and your local damage restoration company.

Always remember, your safety is the most important in any water damage or flooding situation. We are here to help dry out water damaged areas and provide reconstruction services after the flooding has occurred, but it is always best to watch out for your own safety first.

Fire Safety Tips

1/4/2024 (Permalink)

In the case of a fire in your residential or commercial property, it is always essential to be as prepared as possible. The following tips are good ideas for whomever you live with or work with to establish in the case of an emergency.

  1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas (residential)
  2. Install smoke alarms on every level of the building (commercial)
  3. Test smoke alarms every month
  4. Develop and memorize escape plan route
  5. Choose meeting place outside home (or building in the case of commercial spaces)
  6. Know two ways out in case the first one becomes blocked by smoke or fire and causes you to not be able to use that route
  7. Get out and stay out! We can take care of and restore your home, but it’s important to watch out for yourself and your loved ones right away

Mold DOs and DONTs: Before Help Arrives

5/17/2023 (Permalink)

Finding a spot of mold in a closet, basement, or damp area can definitely cause some form of panic. After you call SERVPRO for help, these are a few things that you can do to keep the mold from spreading before our team arrives.

DOs:

  • Stay out of affected areas

If you find mold growing in a closet, do not store any clothing or items in that closet until the mold is removed. Keep out of the area.

  • Turn off the HVAC System and Fans

By doing this, you will keep the mold in one area and prevent it from spreading as much as you can

  • Contact SERVPRO for mold remediation

After calling SERVPRO, we can assure you that we will be able to get rid of the mold in your home and get your home back to normal again shortly.

DONTS:

  • Touch or disturb the mold

Touching the mold can only cause health hazards to you and it can also spread across surfaces

  • Blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth

This can also allow the mold to spread, which we definitely do not want

  • Attempt to dry the area yourself

Leave this one to 0ur professionals, we can take care of it!

  • Spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold

Bleach is unable to penetrate beyond the surface and get to the root of the mold, so this will not get rid of the problem completely

If you find mold in any area of our home, be sure to contact SERVPRO right away and do not try and take care of it yourself. Call us at 570-732-9191 and we will be there to help!

What to do After a House Fire

3/31/2023 (Permalink)

Safety is always the number one priority after a house fire. Before anything, get all of your family members and pets out of the house as quickly as possible. Fires are never a good situation and can be very stressful. Our goal at SERVPRO is to make your experience after a fire as seamless as possible by restoring any damages, cleaning important documents or items for you, and providing reconstruction services if needed.

  1. Do not enter your home after fire damages

Always wait until the fire department gives you an “all clear” to re-enter your home after a fire. You may expose yourself to mold, fumes and particles from soot, water damage, structural issues, gas leaks, or electrical hazards in water.

  1. Call your insurance agent

If the damage is extreme to the point where your home is not liveable, most homeowners’ insurance policies cover the cost of a hotel, short-term rental, or food if your home is damaged due to a fire. How to Best Prepare for Possible Flooding

1/31/2023 (Permalink)

If you ever experience flooding or water damage in your home after a big storm, SERVPRO can fix any damages you may have and be able to get your home looking good as new in no time. These are some ways you can prepare your home for the chance of flooding during a storm or heavy rain.

  • Evacuating and Shelter: Determine both an evacuation and shelter plan in case flooding becomes too extreme and you need to leave your home to protect yourself and your family. Flooding and heavy storms can be a very frightening time, so it is crucial to be able to be prepared for you and your family’s safety needs. Even though it might be upsetting to leave your house with water damage, your safety is the number one priority and SERVPRO can take care of your home as soon as possible.
  • Valuable Items: Store valuables on higher shelves or move valuables from basements to the top floor of your home if flooding is predicted to be extreme. Important things such as documents you need throughout your entire lifetime, childhood photos, electronic devices, and sentimental items should be taken care of and stored away to prevent loss and keep them as far away from water as possible.
  • Drains and Gutters: Keep drains and gutters clean of any debris that may prevent water from draining correctly. Blockage in a drain can cause water to build up and not be able to drain correctly throughout a system, possibly resulting in flooding in your home if not taken care of
  • Waterproofing: Consider purchasing waterproof containers to hold valuable documents such as social security cards, birth certificates, etc. Anything that is paper or flimsy material is at risk with water damage, so doing as much as you can to prevent these losses is essential before an expected flood
  • Food and Water: Stock up on non-perishable food and water if conditions are too extreme to leave your home.
  • Vehicles: Prepare vehicles outside of your home by closing all open windows and roofs, inspecting doors to make sure they are correctly sealed
  • Sump Pump: Consider purchasing a sump pump for your basement to prevent as much flooding and water damage as possible

Commercial Building Maintenance Tips

1/9/2023 (Permalink)

Safety is an extremely important topic when it comes to commercial buildings where people are constantly working and going in and out of. These tips will be able to offer insight on how to keep your commercial space as safe as possible during the winter months with colder temperatures and weather conditions.

  1. Heating Systems

Commercial buildings are typically using heating systems with the frigid weather outside to keep their employees warm and comfortable during their working conditions. SERVPRO can inspect your heating systems and make sure they are being well-maintained to survive the colder months and make sure they are efficiently working and are as up to date as possible.

  1. Thermostats

Even if it appears that your heating systems are working perfectly, cold winds and dropping temperatures can freeze pipes and affect temperatures as well. By calibrating your thermostats and making sure everything is according to plan, you will be able to have a similar success with your heating system

  1. Inspecting Doors and Windows

Doors and windows are primary locations where you can find a sudden rush of cold air entering your building. Even a small crack left open in a window can cause your heating bill to skyrocket if it is constantly trying to keep up with maintaining warmth throughout the building with the breeze coming through the window. Doing a walkthrough of your building at least once a day and making sure doors and windows are properly closed and locked will save you both money and warmth

  1. Outdoor Conditions

Employees are at risk during icy and snowy conditions, especially if the building is still up and operating after a snowfall overnight. If it is safe for employees to come into work, it is crucial that sidewalks and walkways leading to and around the building are both efficiently salted in order to prevent anyone falling and hurting themselves. Rock salt and de-icing liquid are two options that your building could invest in to prevent any accidents happening during these snowy months.

SERVPRO is a commercial cleaning company that can keep your building in perfect condition and help with any needs you may have.

Pennsylvania Hurricane Season MythBusters

10/6/2022 (Permalink)

We all watch the news and hear of hurricane season affecting coastal states. What most people don’t realize is that hurricane season can also affect inland states and cause damage to homes and businesses. Check out some of these hurricane season myths and truths to keep you safe this hurricane season:

Myth: Only homes and communities on the coast need to be worried when a hurricane is approaching. People living further inland are safe.
Truth: Some hurricanes can create winds that have a 1000 mile diameter. These winds can also spawn other destructive weather such as tornadoes that can reach hundreds of miles inland.

Myth: Flooding only happens in a coastal area.
Truth: Storm surges from hurricanes can travel tens of miles inland. Rain from hurricanes can cause flooding hundreds of miles away from the coastline.

Myth: My home and homeowners insurance policy will cover all damages from a hurricane.
Truth: Standard property insurance policies, like home or homeowners insurance, provide protection from many things, including some of the damages caused by a hurricane. They will not, however, cover flood damage, whether it comes from the storm surge or rainfall.

While we won’t get hit with the brunt of a hurricane we can be susceptible to property damages caused by one. Stay alert during this season and monitor your local weather. SERVPRO of Carbon County and Pocono Pines offers 24/7 emergency services. Give us a call if your home or business becomes damaged this hurricane season, 570-732-9191!

Storms

7/22/2022 (Permalink)

After a harsh storm a lot of damage can occur due to water. At SERVPRO of  Carbon County we are here to help you understand. The water damages materials. Wallboard will disintegrate if it remains wet too long; wood can swell, warp, or rot; electrical parts can short out, malfunction, and cause fires or shock.

Mud, silt and unknown contaminants in the water not only get everything dirty, they also create a health hazard.

Dampness promotes the growth of mildew, a mold or fungus that can grow on everything.

The following steps work on all three of these problems. It is very important that they be followed in order.

Lower the humidity: Everything will dry more quickly and clean more easily if you can reduce the humidity in the home. There are five ways for you to lower the humidity and stop the rot and mildew. But you'll have to delay using some methods if you have no electricity.

Open up the house: If the humidity outside is lower than indoors, and if the weather permits, open all the doors and windows to exchange the moist indoor air for drier outdoor air. Your body will tell if the humidity is lower outdoors. If the sun is out, it should be drier outside. If you have a thermometer with a humidity gauge, you can monitor the indoor and outdoor humidity.

On the other hand, when temperatures drop at night, an open home is warmer and will draw moisture indoors. At night and other times when the humidity is higher outdoors, close up the house.

Open closet and cabinet doors: Remove drawers to allow air circulation. Drawers may stick because of swelling. Don't try to force them. Speed drying by opening up the back of the cabinet to let the air circulate. You will probably be able to remove the drawers as the cabinet dries out.

Use fans: Fans help move the air and dry out your home. Do not use central air conditioning or the furnace blower if the ducts were under water. They will blow out dirty air, that might contain contaminants from the sediment left in the duct work. Clean or hose out the ducts first.

Run dehumidifiers: Dehumidifiers and window air conditioners will reduce the moisture, especially in closed up areas.

Why SERVPRO?

4/15/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Carbon County strives to provide our customers with the highest quality cleaning services. That's why we've invested in a collection of new Morantz SM-200 Super Mighty One Ultrasonic Wash Machines.

How does it work?

Think bubbles! Cavitation "bubbles" form when sonic energy creates a void (or cavity) that gets trapped as a bubble in a liquid solution. These microscopic bubbles implode with such force that contaminants adhering to surfaces become dislodged. Ultrasonic cleaning machines scrub surfaces clean through implosions of tiny bubbles. This method is handy for delicate, intricate, or difficult to clean items.

What can it clean?

A better question would be- what can't it clean? Ultrasonic cleaning is suitable for various materials, including metals, glass, rubber, ceramics, and some hard plastics. It can remove dust, dirt, oil, pigments, rust, grease, algae, fungus, bacteria, limescale, polishing compounds, flux agents, fingerprints, soot, blood, and more!

Restoring your belongings is now faster, easier, and more effective with ultrasonic deep cleaning technology!

Water Damage

3/18/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage often occurs in areas that we can’t see – like behind walls, in ceilings and under floors. If left untreated, hidden damage can result in irreversible structural deterioration.

The following may indicate an undetected damage:

  • A musty odor. Musty or earthy damp smells in a home almost always originate from water damage. Where there is moisture, mold is typically also present. Mold spores rapidly overtake porous materials such as wood and drywall within 24 to 48 hours of saturation.
  • Sounds of water when nothing is being used. Listen at night, when the house is quiet, and be sure that you cannot hear any running water or sounds of dripping. One of the most common causes of a dripping sound behind a wall is a leaky pipe.
  • Stains and spotting. Damaged walls and ceilings will eventually show discoloration, stains and spots. Leaky water supply lines, or water leaking in from the roof are the most common culprits of spots and stains on walls and ceilings. If the spots have a fuzzy appearance, or take on a very dark green/black color, it could be visible mold – which means trouble.
  • Gradual changes to walls and flooring. If water is seeping into the subfloor from a saturated foundation or leaking pipes routed through the basement or crawl space, flooring will begin to show changes. Tiles may be loosened, linoleum can begin to peel, and laminate flooring can even warp. Evidence of water damage in the walls appears as peeling or bubbling paint, and cracking in drywall. As drywall absorbs water, it will begin to swell and retract, so any buckling or dimpling should also be noted and checked for water exposure.

At SERVPRO of Carbon County, have the capability to detect hidden water damage using tools such as thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters. If you suspect a hidden damage in your home, we can help!

Our Steps for Property Damage

2/25/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Carbon County & Pocono Pines wants everyone to understand what consists of a water damage and understand what it takes to get your property back to normal.

Full restoration consists of two major phases. The first, mitigation, consists of occasional demolition, cleaning and drying out the structure and belongings. This phase usually takes no more than 3 – 4 days.

Causes of water damage include:

  • Bursting or leaking pipes.
  • Issues with the plumbing system.
  • Buildup in areas prone to collecting water, such as crawl spaces, attics and basements.
  • Faulty or malfunctioning household appliances.
  • HVACs (Heating, ventilating and air conditioning units) issues.

If left untreated, water damage can permanently weaken your home's structure or cause you and your family to become ill. Even a little bit of moisture can attract whole colonies of mold or bacteria.

Within 1 to 24 hours – When water damage lasts for 1 to 24 hours, drywall begins to bulge and break, furniture begins to swell and crack, and metal surfaces begin to tarnish. Within 2 hours to 7 days – You will experience growth and spread of mold and mildew.

It is safe to say that a water damage should be taken seriously and not let untreated. If you ever have to experience this, be sure to call SERVPRO! Call us today - 570-732-9191

Another common issue is frozen pipes. As the temperature drops, your pipes will start to freeze at 20 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water freezes it causes the pipes to expand. This creates pressure on a pipe that can cause it to burst. This will result in flooding to your home or business.

Have you ever thought about what happens after a crime scene is cleared? The cleaning and restoration process begins.

On a crime scene, it is common to have blood and other contaminants that can cause serious health risks if it is not properly addressed. Some of the hazards are blood borne pathogens and harmful chemicals.

For bloodborne pathogens, we utilize hydroperoxide to identify where the bloodborne pathogens are. As you may know, hydrogen peroxide will have a fizz reaction to blood. Once the blood is identity, we will use disinfectant on the hard non-porous surfaces, such as glass, plastics, metals, and varnished wood. For surfaces affected with bloodborne pathogens, we will remove the materials. Some examples of porous materials are drywall and carpet.

Another form of biohazard is sewage backups can be as nasty as it sounds and be extremely dangerous if not properly cleaned up. In the sewage backups, they contain viruses, bacteria and other microbes.

There are different types of containment water:
First, there is category 1, also known as clean water. Clean water can become contaminated if it is left untreated. Next, there is category 2, the Gray Water stage, this water can be from washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow. The last type is Category 3, which is called black water and can include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

At SERVPRO of Carbon County, we handle sewage jobs often and are experts on cleaning it up. We tackle sewage jobs wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) to remove the contaminants followed by disinfectant.

From residential to commercial services, SERVPRO of Carbon County can help you!

  • Avoid excessive movement to prevent soot particles from sticking to upholstery.
  • During a fire, before opening a door use the back of your hand to feel the door handle. If the door handle is hot, do not open the door.
  • Call 911 immediately.
  • Evacuate yourself immediately.
  • Never enter back into your home once you evacuate.
  • In the event of heavy smoke, crawl low under any smoke as you evacuate.
  • If your clothes catch fire, always stop, drop and roll.

After the smoke clears, SERVPRO of Carbon County and Pocono Pines has the ability to make your home or business look “Like it never even happened.”

Fires can happen fast and you need to respond quickly. Here are some tips for fires:

  • Make sure you install smoke detectors on every level of your house. The placement of the smoke detectors should be at the top of open stairways, at the bottom of stairways, outside of bedrooms.
  • Always test smoke detectors and replace batteries.
  • Smoke detectors should be replaced once every 10 years.
  • Ahead of time, practice your escape routes with your family, including your pets.
  • Invest in an escape ladder if your house has more than one level.
  • Have your home insured. If you are renting an apartment consider buying renters insurance.

Got Frozen Pipes?

2/24/2021 (Permalink)

FROZEN PIPES Frozen pipe example.

Unfortunately, the winter can be a danger to your home or business. This Pennsylvania winter brought snow, ice and freezing temperatures, which can lead to frozen pipes. As temperatures drop, you have a higher risk of your pipes freezing.

Water in your pipes can freeze and as the water freezes it expands. The expansion will eventually burst causing damage and potential flooding. A common reason for freezing is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage.

What are the signs of frozen pipes? You may notice limited water coming out of your faucets and gurgling sounds coming from your pipes. In addition, as the water is freezing and expanding it might be a visible sign.

At SERVPRO of Carbon County and Pocono Pines, our team can repair the pipes, cleanup and restore the water damage caused by your frozen pipes. The cleanup and restoration process begins when we arrive to your emergency!

SERVPRO of Carbon County and Pocono Pines is here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Winter means Ice Dams!

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

Gutter with icicles This is a ice dam that caused a water leak to the finished basement.

What is an Ice Dam? Ice dams are common this time of year. Ice dams form when snow melts on your roof until it meets the unheated bottom edge of the roof and then freezes. Any additional melted snow or water will not properly drain off of the roof and can cause many issues to your home.

Ice damming can cause water leak(s) into your home, potentially causing damages to your walls, ceilings, insulation and other areas. Recently, we had a house with a water leak in their finished basement due to ice dams. Our team responded quickly and dried the basement by setting up an Velo Pro air mover to help remove moisture from the air.

Our team can help mitigate water damage caused by ice dams, as well as get your structure back to preloss condition. SERVPRO of Carbon County and Pocono Pines can help you with your ice dams.
